A hands-on workshop with clay, drawing and collage
In 1867, a mysterious wooden figure dating back to the Bronze Age was found by a clay worker at Zitherixon Quarry, near Kingsteignton. For 2,400 years, it had been preserved within the waterlogged ball clay of the Bovey Basin.
The Figure is now on display at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. Taking it as our starting point, this informal, hands-on workshop invites participants to explore its story through making and imagination. What might its missing arms have looked like? What was the landscape like 2,400 years ago? And what can the Figure tell us about the place where it was found?
Working with clay, drawing and collage, we’ll explore connections between archaeology, landscape and local history, imagine new stories around the Figure, and think about how it might be displayed and its story told here in the Bovey Basin today.
Open to children, young people and adults. All welcome! No previous experience needed.
